Matador is a Danish television series that was produced and shown from 1978 to 1982. Between 1929 and 1947, the story takes place in the fictitious Danish village of Korsbaek. It focuses on the competition between the families of two businessmen: the banker Hans Christian Varns, an established local aristocrat, and the social climber Mads Skjern, who comes in town at the beginning of the series. The series' tentative English title, Matador, was derived from a localized version of the board game Monopoly. In addition, the term "matador" is frequently used to denote a business magnate in modern Danish; in the series, it refers to the character Mads Skjern and his entrepreneurial cunning. Matador was conceived by novelist Lise Nrgaard, who co-wrote the majority of the episodes with Karen Smith, Jens Louis Petersen, and Paul Hammerich. The series was directed by renowned Danish filmmaker Erik Balling. The series is one of the most well-known and well-liked examples of Danish television and represents the culmination of the long-term development of Danish television drama by the public service channel Danmarks Radio. The series has become a part of the modern self-understanding of Danes, partly due to its successful blend of melodrama and a distinct warm Danish humour in the depiction of characters, which were portrayed by a wide range of the most popular Danish actors of the time; but also not least because of its accurate depiction of a turbulent Denmark from around the beginning of the Great Depression and through Nazi Germany's occupation of Denmark during World War II.
